How had I not noticed this before?
Back in 2x06 Tallahassee, Emma does her little eyelash flutter thing to Killian (for what I think is the very first time). It’s really easy to miss, but it happens right after Killian says “point taken” after Emma explains that it would be better to knock out the giant with the poppy seeds, rather than to “run like hell” as Killian had previously suggested. He then flashes her a smile, and Emma is surprised, then a little flustered.
What’s so significant about this moment is that it shows Killian was ready to admit that Emma had a better plan as soon as he’d heard it. Emma, being who she is, isn’t used to people taking her word instead of doubting her first. It’s much more significant in this episode, because Emma and Killian’s adventure is directly paralleled to Emma and Neal’s first meeting. With Neal, one of their first scenes had him imply to a police officer that Emma couldn’t drive, warranting Emma to accuse Neal of being a misogynist.
A lot of us have already pointed out Killian’s habit of building Emma up (in not just this episode, but pretty much the entire series so far). I had always thought that it started when he said that she was “bloody brilliant” and “amazing” after she successfully obtained the compass, but no, it started even before they saw Tiny for the first time.
Also, I mean, how cute is that? She did the eyelash flutter thing because he smiled at her!
I also adore this scene for another reason: it’s yet one more proof that not only Killian completely respects and appreciates Emma’s intelligence and capabilities and clearly has less than 0 problems with following a woman’s lead, and it’s one of the 54654764 reasons I just can’t ever wrap my head around opposers arguments that he is misogynistic/sexist.
